Public Transit

Public transit should be reliable, efficient, and accessible to all. Unfortunately, Louisiana’s public transportation infrastructure has been underfunded and underdeveloped for too long, limiting economic opportunities, increasing traffic congestion, and leaving too many residents without viable mobility options. It’s time to invest in a modern, forward-thinking transit system that connects our communities, reduces commute times, and supports working families.

My vision for public transit in Louisiana includes:

1. Building a Light Rail System for the Capital Region

The Baton Rouge area has outgrown its current public transportation options, and a light rail system is the next step in making transit a true alternative to car dependency. I will fight for the construction of a light rail system that connects key parts of East Baton Rouge Parish—including North Baton Rouge, downtown, LSU, Southern University, and major economic hubs—giving residents a reliable and sustainable transportation option.

2. Completing the Long-Delayed NOLA-to-BR Commuter Rail

The commuter rail between Baton Rouge and New Orleans has been discussed for years, yet it remains stalled due to a lack of political will. This rail line would strengthen economic ties between Louisiana’s two largest cities, create new job opportunities, and alleviate the heavy traffic on I-10. I will fight to secure the necessary funding and partnerships to get this project across the finish line and make it a reality.

3. Upgrading and Electrifying the Bus Fleet

The Capital Area Transit System (CATS) must be modernized, with a shift toward an all-electric fleet that is safer, more energy-efficient, and better for the environment. I will advocate for funding to replace aging buses with new electric models while improving bus maintenance and scheduling to increase reliability.

4. Investing in the Workforce: Transit Workers Deserve Better

A strong transit system depends on a well-supported workforce. I will fight for:

  • Competitive Wages for Operators – Raising pay to match regional and national standards to attract and retain quality drivers.
  • Enhanced Safety Measures – Implementing better protections for transit workers and passengers, including improved security and enforcement measures.
  • Investment in Training – Ensuring operators receive top-tier training and career development opportunities to create a professional and highly skilled workforce.

5. Expanding Access & Service Frequency

Public transit should be a viable option for everyone—not just those without other means of transportation. That means increasing the frequency of bus and rail service, expanding routes to underserved areas, and ensuring public transportation is accessible, reliable, and efficient.

A Transit System That Moves Louisiana Forward

Public transportation is about more than just getting from Point A to Point B—it’s about economic opportunity, sustainability, and a better quality of life for all residents. By making these investments, we can build a transit system that reduces congestion, connects communities, creates jobs, and makes Louisiana a leader in forward-thinking transportation solutions.
